Kick Ash launches as part of Healthy Schools Cambridgeshire & Peterborough

Kick Ash is back! After a hiatus in 2018, Kick Ash, delivered by Everyone Health, launches again in Spring 2019 as part of Healthy Schools Cambridgeshire & Peterborough.

Led by young people for young people, Kick Ash is based on a framework of peer mentorship through which Year 10 students are enabled, through practical workshops, to understand the key aspects of smoking control and are equipped with the skills and confidence to deter their peers from taking up the smoking habit. This approach to a smoking prevention scheme, which has already proved popular in a number of Cambridgeshire schools, will now form an integral part of the new Healthy Schools programme.

Kick Ash focuses on encouraging young people to be proud to be smoke free whilst exploring the complex range of individual, social and environmental factors that influences smoking decisions. It also offers the students an opportunity to fulfil the community engagement and volunteering aspects of any citizenship award they may be working towards through supporting the delivery of the Kick Ash workshop sessions to the Year 6 pupils in the feeder primary schools.

Two days is all that is required for Year 10 students, interested in becoming a mentor, to be released from curriculum time. One day is devoted to training to be a mentor whilst the other day is designated for the visit to a local primary school to work with the Year 6 pupils. The activities undertaken will address the key Science and PSHE objectives relating to cigarettes, peer relationships, the reasons for starting to smoke as well as the associated behavioural risks and consequences.

To ensure that the cycle of Kick Ash activities can be planned for and delivered easily across both the secondary and primary schools the Kick Ash mentors will ,from now on, be either recruited and trained at the end of Year 9 (during June/July) or at the beginning of Year 10 (during September/October).

If a school would like to find out more about the organisation and implementation of the programme as well as the wider benefits for all involved then simply
